What is the Vietnamese Lunar Calendar?

The Vietnamese Lunar Calendar (Âm Lịch) is a lunisolar calendar used to determine traditional festivals, Tết (Lunar New Year), and auspicious dates. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, it follows the Moon's cycles, with months of 29–30 days and occasional leap months.

What are Hoàng Đạo (auspicious) days?

Hoàng Đạo days are considered auspicious in Vietnamese tradition. They are determined by which of the 12 celestial gods (Thập Nhị Thần) governs the day. Six gods are auspicious: Thanh Long, Minh Đường, Kim Quỹ, Ngọc Đường, Tư Mệnh, Thiên Đức. These days are traditionally favored for weddings, business openings, and important decisions.

How are lucky hours (Giờ Hoàng Đạo) calculated?

Lucky hours are 6 of the 12 two-hour periods in a day, determined by the day's Heavenly Stem (Can). For example, on a Giáp/Kỷ day, the lucky hours are Tý (23–01), Sửu (01–03), Thìn (07–09), Tỵ (09–11), Mùi (13–15), and Tuất (19–21).

What are Tam Nương Sát days?

Tam Nương Sát (Three Lady Curse) days fall on the 3rd, 7th, 13th, 18th, 22nd, and 27th of each lunar month. They are traditionally considered inauspicious for starting major events like weddings, contracts, or business openings.
